Scope and Content

Correspondence with Alexander Mackenzie Drysdale (1837-1939), journalist and editor, relating to discussion of Drysdale's employment as a reporter at the Manchester Guardian, with reference to salary and previous experience. Also included is correspondence relating to a complaint by Drysdale, early in his employment, at having not yet had the opportunity to provide any original writing for the paper. There is correspondence relating to the end of Drysdale's employment as editor of the Yorkshire Observer, and a request by Drysdale to be considered for re-employment at the Manchester Guardian, and to be allowed to write occasional articles for the back pages of the paper.

There is also correspondence relating to Drysdale's employment as a parliamentary correspondent for the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of the role and salary, accompanied by related internal memoranda. There is correspondence relating to alterations in Drysdale's role, and to acknowledgement of a rebuke from Scott [concerning an unknown incident which occurred whilst Drysdale was representing the Manchester Guardian].

There is correspondence relating to the discussion of the termination of Drysdale's employment, owing to a need to economise, with discussion of arrangements and terms.
