Scope and Content

Correspondence with Lascelles Abercrombie (1881-1938), poet and literary critic, relating to request for employment by the Manchester Guardian as a writer of articles and reviews, and summarising Abercrombie's previous experience.

Arrangements are made for C.P. Scott to meet with Lascelles Abercrombie. There is also correspondence relating to Scott's regret at losing Abercrombie as a reviewer owing to his success as a writer (GDN/A/A3/17), Abercrombie's suggestion of writing articles relating to architecture (GDN/A/A3/15), and a request from C.P. Scott that Abercrombie, as its president, write an article on the S.C.R. [Society for Cultural Relations between the British Commonwealth and the USSR](GDN/A/A3/18).

Also included are letters of recommendation from Robert C. Trevelyan, John Masefield and J[ohn] L[awrence] Hammond, and internal correspondence discussing the potential employment of Abercrombie.

GDN/A/A3/12-14 are literary reviews written by Abercrombie for the Manchester Guardian between 9-30 Mar 1910.

GDN/A/A3/20-31 are newspaper cuttings entitled 'Mr Abercrombie Cuttings', from unknown publications.
