Scope and Content

Correspondence with Betty Lee Sargent, journalist, relating to Sargent's appointment as assistant correspondent to Robert Dell, journalist, in Geneva for the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of arrangements for the appointment with Dell, and accompanied by related internal memoranda. Also included is a letter of credential for Sargent as correspondent for the paper.

There is a notice of the termination of Sargent's role as assistant owing to Dell's retirement, and negotiations of terms for Sargent to continue as a correspondent for the paper, which are discontinued, owing to the decision to send a member of staff from the Manchester Guardian to Geneva [following the outbreak of the Second World War].

GDN/A/S12/6 is an article on Sargent entitled 'Geneva Writer Fearful of War' in the Los Angeles Times, 1938.
