Scope and Content

Correspondence between W.F. Houghton and E.T. Scott, relating to a request by Houghton to be considered for employment at the Manchester Guardian, with details of qualifications, which is refused, as no vacancy is available. Also included are requests by Scott for the provision of specimens of work, which are provided, and an offer of an [unknown] article for publication by Houghton, which is rejected. There is correspondence relating to arrangements for a meeting between Houghton and E.T. Scott, and also discussion of arrangements for a 6 week trial for Houghton at the paper, accompanied by related internal memoranda. There is also a further request by Houghton to be considered for employment at the paper, which is refused.

There are copies of letters of recommendation for Houghton from A.B. Steel, historian and fellow Christ's college, Cambridge and S.W. Grose, senior tutor at Christ's College, Cambridge.
