Scope and Content

Correspondence with Sir James Ramsay Montagu Butler (1889-1975), historian, relating to an offer of employment as a principal leader writer at the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of the requirements of the post and the salary offered. Butler declines the offer of employment.

Also included is correspondence with Howard Temperley, historian, relating to discussion of Butler as a successor to C.E. Montague, journalist and novelist, who is due to retire, and a request that Temperley discuss the offer of employment with Butler.
