Scope and Content

Correspondence with George Jackson (1864-1945), clergyman and academic, relating to Jackson's work for the Manchester Guardian as occasional contributor, book reviewer and also as writer of the regular free church column, with an internal memorandum discussing Jackson's previous experience. Also included is discussion of a request by Jackson to write an article on the 'Sunday question' [relating to secular activities on a Sunday?], which is declined, owing to potential opposition to the view expressed by the paper previously. There is discussion of procedure and the employment of Jackson's discretion for the selection of books for review by Jackson, and confirmation that Jackson will write a memoir for [Frederic] W. Macdonald, clergyman.

There is also discussion of the difficulties in striking the appropriate tone in a religious column for a secular paper. There is correspondence relating to a change in the fee provided for the free church column, owing to the decision to decrease its length, and also to discussion of Jackson's retirement from employment, owing to failing eyesight.

GDN/A/J1/1 is an internal employment history index card for Jackson, 1916.
