Scope and Content

Correspondence with Sir Robert Charles Kirkwood Ensor (1877-1958), journalist and historian, relating to discussion of the employment of Ensor as a leader writer for the Manchester Guardian, with reference to the completion of his studies at Balliol College, Oxford, applications for fellowships, arrangements for beginning work and to potential additional employment as a secretary to Scott. There is also discussion of Ensor's desire to continue in his employment at the Manchester Guardian, but in addition to sit his examinations for the bar.

There is a letter of recommendation for Ensor for Scott in support of an application for the post of chair of Latin at the University of Liverpool. Also included is correspondence relating to a request from Ensor to be considered for re-employment at the Manchester Guardian, following the termination of his employment on the Daily News, and an offer of short term employment from Scott, which is declined.

There is also correspondence between E.T. Scott and Ensor, relating to a request for re-employment as a leader writer, following the end of Ensor's employment at the Daily Chronicle. There is discussion of arrangements for Ensor to contribute articles over the telephone from London, and the issues this approach may produce, and also discussion of subjects for leader articles on government agricultural policy, and on the proposed changes to the Charing Cross bridge.

There is a request for a short review by Ensor of a book [Evidence in Criminal Cases by William Shaw], accompanied by a covering letter from Nathan Laski, businessman and magistrate. Also included is a letter from E.T. Scott relating to the return of articles by Ensor discovered in the papers of C.P. Scott, following his death.

There is a letter of reference for Ensor from [Sidney Ball], Senior Tutor, St John's College, Oxford.
