Scope and Content

Correspondence with Robert Crawford Hawkin, lawyer and writer, relating to a request by Hawkin for Scott to assist in inducing the Liberal [party members in] Oldham to allow Hawkin to address them as a potential candidate [for member of parliament], which is refused, as Scott explains he does not have any influence in Oldham.

Also included is correspondence relating to requests by Hawkin for advice, assistance in business management and financial backing [for the formation of a new newspaper], which are refused. There is discussion of a letter to the editor by Hawkin for publication in the Manchester Guardian on the neutrality of the [international] enclave in Shanghai [in the conflict between China and Japan], which is rejected, and an expression of condolence by Hawkin to E.T. Scott on the death of Scott.

GDN/A/H44/12 is a newspaper cutting of an obituary for Hawkin, 1939.
