Scope and Content

Correspondence with Wilfrid L. Middleton, journalist, relating to requests to be considered for employment as a leader writer for the Manchester Gaurdian, with discussion of previous experience, and the provision of specimens of work, accompanied by related internal memoranda. There are letters of recommendation from George E. Leach, journalist.

There is correspondence relating to the provision of thanks to Middleton for assistance in providing cover for [J.G.] Hamilton, journalist, as correspondent for the Manchester Guardian in Paris, with discussion of Middleton's intention of leaving his current employment at The Times, and a request to employed as Hamilton's replacement, which is declined. There are arrangements for a meeting between Middleton and Scott. There is a request by Scott that Middleton contribute occasional articles from Paris to the personal column of the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of proposed subjects. Also included is an obituary by Middleton for Philippe Berthelot, diplomat.
