Scope and Content

Correspondence with Arthur Augustus William Harry Ponsonby, first Baron Ponsonby of Shulbrede (1871-1946), politician and peace campaigner, relating to an inability to publish an article by Ponsonby on electoral and constitutional reform, with reference to a referendum on proportional representation, and the House of Lords.

Also included is discussion of a proposed weekly column for the Manchester Guardian by Ponsonby entitled 'Casual Observations', with discussion of form, content and payment for articles, accompanied by related internal memoranda. There is reference to a column which is deemed to contain too much political observation, and Ponsonby's acknowledgement of the lack of casual material. There is discussion of the cessation of Ponsonby's column for the paper [on his appointment as Under-secretary of state for dominion affairs], with an expression of gratitude from Ponsonby for his time with the paper.

GDN/A/p46/9 is a column by Ponsonby entitled 'Casual Observations' in the Manchester Guardian, [1928].
