Scope and Content

Correspondence with Allan Ramsden, journalist, relating to an application by Ramsden for employment at the Manchester Guardian, with details of previous experience and the provision of specimens of work. There is a request by Ramsden for an increase in salary, which is granted.

Also included is correspondence relating to Ramsden's resignation from the editorial staff of the paper in order to take up the position of northern correspondent for The Times. There is a request from Geoffrey Dawson, newspaper editor, that Ramsden receive the same facilities from the Manchester Guardian as the previous Times correspondent, which is granted. Also included is discussion and clarification of the facilities offered to Ramsden, including the use of office space and of the file room at the paper, accompanied by related internal memoranda.

GDN/A/R6/17 is a notice of Ramsden's appointment as northern correspondent for The Times in Newspaper World, 1939.
