Scope and Content

Correspondence with Edward George Downing Liveing (1895-1963), author and historian, relating to the provision of work by Liveing on Transjordania for potential publication in the Manchester Guardian, and an offer to act as a reviewer for the paper. Also included is correspondence relating to an offer of articles by Liveing, and also by F.A. Hampton, psychologist, with reference to previous articles by Hampton written for Discovery. There is a suggestion that Hampton might contribute occasional articles on psychology, and discussion of the sourcing of potential contributors on science for the paper by Liveing, which is accepted, and accompanied by correspondence on payment for Liveing's services, and the continuation of employing Liveing in this capacity.

There is correspondence relating to a request for an article on broadcasting by Liveing, in his role as station director [and regional director] for the BBC, for publication in the Manchester Guardian,with the suggestion by Liveing that he produce a short series of articles on the subject, which is accepted. Also included is a request for permission to employ [Neville] Cardus, writer on cricket and music critic, to commentate on cricket for the BBC for a short series of matches, which is declined. There are offers by Liveing of an article on broadcasting in the north, and of an article on the working of the North-Western Adult Education Council by its chairman, Doctor Moberly, which are accepted.

Also included is correspondence between Liveing and W.P. Crozier, relating to L's leaving his role at the BBC, with thanks for the support for northern broadcasting provided by the Manchester Guardian.

There is correspondence discussing the recommendation of Liveing by John Masefield, poet and novelist.
