Scope and Content

Correspondence with C.R. Hargrove, journalist, relating to a request by Hargrove to be considered for employment at the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of previous experience, which is accepted. Also included are a letter of recommendation for Hargrove from [Adolphus William] Ward, historian and a letter of introduction from J.S.R. Phillips, journalist.

There is correspondence relating to the offer of an unpaid trial for Hargrove at the Manchester Guardian, and discussion of his continuing employment at the paper as a sub-editor, with reference to salary. Also included is discussion of Hargrove's employment in the foreign department of The Times and reference to his work in America and Japan. There is an offer from Hargrove of his services to write articles on America, China and Japan, accompanied by internal memoranda discussing the subject.

There is also correspondence relating to a request by Hargrove for re-employment at the Manchester Guardian, as a foreign correspondent, or in Britain, accompanied by related internal memoranda.
