Scope and Content

Correspondence with Lawrence Warrington Haward, writer and curator, relating to a request that Haward be considered for employment as a music critic by the Manchester Guardian, with details of his previous experience, which is refused, owing to a lack of a vacant post. There are letters of recommendation for Haward from the Cambridge University appointments board, and [Goldsworthy Lowes?] Dickinson, scholar.

There is discussion of a recommendation made by Haward of Eric Newton, artist, writer and art critic, for employment at the Manchester Guardian. Also included is correspondence relating to discussion of the donation by Scott of a portrait of Rabindranath Tagore, poet and educationist, by Burmon Ray to the Manchester City Art Gallery, and the suggestion that it instead be offered to the Manchester Reference Library, which is accepted.

GDN/A/H40/10 is an obituary for Haward, in the Manchester Guardian], 1957.
