Scope and Content

Correspondence with S. Lupton, journalist and editor, relating to requests by Lupton to act as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian in Natal, with reference to services which could be supplied, and details of previous and current work experience, and a specimen of Lupton's work [not included], accompanied by a related internal memorandum.

Also included is discussion of an article sent from Australia by Lupton on the Annual Conference of the Provincial Press Association. There is an offer from Lupton to act as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian from Switzerland, and the provision of an article by Lupton entitled 'Irish Home Rule; A Swiss Opinion' for potential publication in the paper. There is a request by Lupton for a meeting with Scott on his return from India, which is accepted and offer of an article on increased customs duty in India on cotton goods, which is refused. Also included is discussion of the British position in Argentina, where Lupton is employed as a journalist, and of Lupton's views on the need for publicity for the Lancashire cotton industry in India, and the press coverage in India it receives. Offers of articles on these subjects are declined.

There are multiple requests for temporary employment, and employment as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian by Lupton, which are declined.
