Scope and Content

Correspondence with William O'Brien (1852-1928), journalist and Irish nationalist, relating to discussion of comments made in the Manchester Guardian on a letter to the editor of The Times by O'Brien [on home rule for Ireland, entitled 'Mr O'Brien on Value of the Truce'], with discussion of negotiations for the settlement for Ireland, and reference to [David] Lloyd George, prime minister, and Eamon De Valera, taoiseach and president of Èire, and the provision by Scott of a copy of an article on the subject in the Manchester Guardian to O'Brien.

There an apology from O'Brien that views expressed privately to the Manchester Guardian were published in the same form in the Daily News, which is acknowledged by Scott, with discussion of the hope that the article will have had an influence upon [David] Lloyd George, prime minister. Also included is a response to a request [by Scott] that O'Brien write an article on the conditions in Mallow during the recent troubles in Ireland, which is declined, and contains discussion of a meeting between O'Brien and De Valera.
