Scope and Content

Correspondence with Julio Álvarez del Vayo (1890-1975) , journalist and politician, relating to the engagement of del Vayo as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian in Madrid, with discussion of the terms of employment, articles, and the need for anonymity and secrecy to ensure del Vayo's safety in Spain. Also included is a letter of recommendation for del Vayo from J.G. Hamilton, journalist. There is a telegram expressing good wishes on Scott's 80th birthday, and praise of the paper, and a request by del Vayo for a meeting with Scott on a visit to Britain, which is granted. Also included is a memorandum summarising the meeting. There is an offer by del Vayo to carry out special work for the Manchester Guardian, provision of an article on Spain's economic activity, and discussion of the situation in Spain.

There is correspondence between del Vayo and E.T. Scott, relating to discussion of the arrangement between del Vayo and the Manchester Guardian in terms of salary, and work for other papers, and arrangements for cover for del Vayo's work as correspondent during a period of absence owing to illness. Also included is discussion of del Vayo's resignation, owing to his appointment as Spanish ambassador to Berlin, which is acknowledged with an expression of thanks for his service, and a request for recommendations from del Vayo for his replacement, which is granted. Also included is an internal memorandum discussing the subject.
