Scope and Content

Correspondence with William Havergal Brian (1876-1972), composer, relating to a request by Brian to be considered for employment as a music critic by the Manchester Guardian, following the death of Samuel Langford, which is refused as a new music critic has already been appointed. Also included are internal memoranda discussing the subject, and an excerpt from the Dictionary of Modern Music relating to Brian. There is correspondence relating to Brian's appointment to the editorial staff of Musical Opinion.

There are letters of recommendation for Brian from Professor Granville [Ramsome] Bantock, composer, and [Sir] Edward Elgar, composer and conductor.
