Scope and Content

Correspondence with Richard Binns, journalist, relating to an enquiry as to whether, as a sub-editor at the Manchester Guardian, he might apply for the post of editor of the Manchester Guardian Weekly.

There is correspondence relating to Binns' health, as he is diagnosed with tuberculosis whilst on holiday in Italy. There is reference to medical bills, and details of his convalescence, with discussion of the course of treatment he is undergoing with [Henri] Spahlinger, bacteriologist, and the negative press coverage of Spahlinger's vaccine treatment.

Also included is discussion of Binns' return to work, continuation of vaccine treatment, and a proposed move to Blackpool. There is correspondence requesting Binns' resignation, following a loss of confidence in him by Scott following the discovery that he is living in Blackpool with a married woman, with internal memoranda discussing the subject.

There is correspondence relating to a dispute between Binns and his wife over the payment of financial maintenance by Binns following their separation, with reference to the grounds for his dismissal at the Manchester Guardian. There are also letters on this subject between Mrs Binns and E.T. Scott, and letters from the solicitors of both parties, with the information that the case may be brought to court, and C.P. Scott or E.T. Scott will be required to give testimony.
