Scope and Content

Correspondence with Essil Rutherston (1880-1952), artist, relating to discussion of a meeting between Scott and Rutherston, and of Rutherston's visit to Manchester, which will include chairing a lecture on modern art at the art gallery in Manchester, with reference to the provision of the catalogue for an exhibition by Rutherston to Scott. Also included are the catalogue for the Exhibition of the Rutherston Gift of Modern Works of Art at the City of Manchester Art Gallery, a report on the Rutherston Loan scheme, 1928, and a change of address card for Rutherston.

There is correspondence relating to a protest by Rutherston over the refusal by the art gallery committee of the [City of Manchester art gallery] to accept the gift of a picture entitled Nude by Vivian Pitchforth, artist, as it is considered improper. There is a request for a letter to the editor and a photograph of the picture in question to be published in the Manchester Guardian, and discussion of Rutherston's later decision not to request its publication at the present time. Also included is a copy of the letter to the editor by Rutherston.

There is also correspondence between Jeanette Rutherston, niece of Rutherston, and Scott, relating to a request for publicity for a charity matinée in aid of the British Empire Cancer Campaign in the Manchester Guardian, which is granted. Also included is a flyer, entitled the Margaret Morris Matinée, and the provision of a ticket to the performance.
