Scope and Content

Correspondence between I.S. McClelland, civil servant and W.P. Crozier, relating to an enquiry by McClelland as to potential employment at the Manchester Guardian, which is declined owing to a lack of vacancies, and followed with a request for the provision of information on McClelland and his previous experience, accompanied by related internal memoranda. There are letters of recommendation for McClelland from Ronald Buchanan McCallum, historian and college head, and W.G. Maclagan, philosopher.

There is also correspondence relating to arrangements for two trial periods of employment for McClelland at the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of arrangements, potential vacancies, and the suggestion that McClelland read and study the leader and short leader articles printed in the paper prior to arrival. There are also internal memoranda discussing the subject, and with lists of the dates of leader articles produced by McClelland.

GDN/A/M6/21-30 are leader articles by McClelland entitled 'The Wild Birds Acts', 'Stag Hunting', 'The Ulster Census', 'Croce and Liberty', 'Saving the Country House', 'A Viking Democrat', 'A Plague of Locusts', 'Nutrition', 'Rival Illuminations', 'Uses of the Coconut' in the Manchester Guardian, 1937.
