Scope and Content

Correspondence between Cecil Gray (1895-1951), music critic and composer, and E.T. Scott, relating to the employment of Gray as London music critic for the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of the proposed work, length of and payment for articles, and accompanied by related internal memoranda.

Also included is correspondence relating to discussion of difficulties which have arisen between Gray and [Neville] Cardus, writer on cricket and music critic [for the Manchester Guardian], with discussion of the duplication of articles produced on composers and concerts. There are internal memorandum and letters between Cardus and E.T. Scott discussing the subject. There is also discussion of the form and content of Gray's articles, the sub-editing of articles, and on the notices of performances provided.

There is correspondence between Gray and W.P. Crozier, relating to a change in the arrangements for the coverage of music by the Manchester Guardian, as Cardus will now provide coverage of music in London, with a request that Gray continue to cover individual concerts, which is declined. There is also a related internal memorandum discussing the subject.
