Scope and Content

Correspondence with Sir Charles Herbert Reilly (1874-1948), architect and town planner, relating to discussion of a book [on architecture] sent to Reilly for review, which is declined, on the grounds that it is deemed by Reilly as unworthy of notice, under the guidance provided to reviewers by the Manchester Guardian. Also included is a letter of recommendation for Reilly from [Oliver] Elton, literary scholar and translator.

There is a letter of apology for the use of Reilly's initials on reviews published in the paper without permission, and for the editing of reviews without a proof copy of the changes sent out to Reilly. There is a request from Scott for articles on new and recent buildings in Manchester from Reilly, and a complaint by Reilly that he was not asked to contribute to a Manchester Guardian Commercial supplement on architecture, and a letter of apology from Scott on the subject, accompanied by related internal memoranda. Also included is a covering letter for a request for [unknown] advice from [Neville] Laski, lawyer and judge, which is granted, with a reference to Reilly's pride in writing for the Manchester Guardian.

GDN/A/R23/2 is an internal employment history index card for Reilly, 1907.
