Scope and Content

Correspondence with Lawrence H. Dawson, writer and editor, relating to the employment of Dawson on a temporary basis to produce abstracts of all of the leader articles published in the Manchester Guardian from 1871 onwards for a proposed work on the history of the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of the form and content of the abstracts, and the hours of and payment for the work. There is also correspondence relating to Dawson's decision to discontinue the work, owing to an inability to produce the abstracts at the speed required. There are accompanying internal memoranda discussing the subject, and a proposal to divide and complete the remaining work on the project amongst the staff of the Manchester Guardian.

GDN/A/D20/1 is a transcript of a letter to the editor of Newspaper World by J.R. Scott on the Manchester Guardian and Evening News Society, entitled 'The Manchester Guardian Experiment'.

GDN/A/D20/2 is a copy of the minutes of a meeting between Sir Walter Berry and Sir Edward Illife of Allied Newspapers, and E.T. Scott, J.R. Scott and W.P. Crozier, relating to discussion of a potential joint board scheme, and the adoption of the Manchester Guardian and Allied Newspapers into a holding company.

GDN/A/D20/3-4 are a prospectus and application form for the issue of £300,000 6 per cent first mortgage debentures at par 1940-1950.

GDN/A/D20/23 is an illustration of the Candler Building in New York, taken from the guidebook, New York, The Metropolis of the Western World, which is annotated with 'Manchester Guardian, 22nd floor'.

GDN/A/D20/26 is an article entitled 'Manchester Guardian Results' on the annual report and accounts of the Manchester Guardian for the financial year 1932-1933 in the World's Press News.
