Scope and Content

Correspondence with Hamed Mahmud, physician, relating to the suggestion of a meeting between Mahmud and Scott conveyed by [Bernard Noel] Langdon-Davies to discuss the political situation in Egypt, with reference to Mahmud's status as representative in Britain for [Saad] Zaghloul Pasha, Egyptian nationalist and statesman. Also included is correspondence relating to assistance provided by Scott in attempting to obtain a visa for Mahmud to Gibraltar to attend to the health of Zaghloul Pasha, which has previously been denied. There is discussion of a potential meeting between Mahmud and [David] Lloyd George, prime minister, to discuss the visa request, which does not take place [owing Lloyd George's resignation]. Also included is an expression of thanks by Mahmud to Scott, when his visa is granted.

There is discussion of Mahmud's suggestion of the potential benefits of an unofficial meeting between Lloyd George and Zaghloul Pasha, which is conveyed to Lloyd George by Scott. Also included are requests by Mahmud that Scott meet with A.R. [Bialy?], lawyer and counsel for the defence for the conspiracy trial in Cairo, 1923, and with Makram Bey Ebeid [Pasha], politician.

There is a discussion of a meeting between Mahmud and Scott, of the political situation in Egypt, and of the censorship of the information given to the national press regarding Egypt, with an appeal for support from Scott and the Manchester Guardian. There is an offer by Mahmud of an [unknown] article, and a request for a further introduction to Lloyd George. Also included is an expression of thanks for a leader article in the Manchester Guardian by Scott on the situation in Egypt, for which Mahmud requests to be able to travel to Manchester to thank Scott in person.
