Scope and Content

Correspondence with Ferruccio Bonavia, violinist and music critic, relating to his employment as a music correspondent for the Manchester Guardian. There is correspondence discussing reviews and notices, payment for work, and internal memoranda on Bonavia's abilities as a writer.

Also included is correspondence relating to Bonavia's move to London, and continuing employment by the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of arrangements and salary for the new position. There is also discussion of Bonavia's request to carry out additional work as a correspondent for the Daily News, with internal memoranda discussing the restrictions under which this would operate.

There is correspondence relating to Scott's intention of employing an additional music correspondent, [Ernest] Newman, [which leads to Bonavia's resignation]. Also included is internal correspondence between Scott and James Bone, journalist, discussing the subject. There is a letter relating a war bonus which Scott wishes to give to Bonavia.

There is a letter of recommendation for Bonavia from Doctor Adolph Brodsky, musician, forwarded to Scott by C[harles] H[arold] Herford, literary scholar.
