Scope and Content

Correspondence with Hester Gray, suffragist, relating to Gray's employment as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian in India, with discussion of a potential article on the position and outlook for women in India, and an article on anti-British feeling in India with discussion of General [Reginald] Dyer, army officer, which is accepted.

Also included is an internal memorandum relating to Gray's return to England, and potential use of her services by the Manchester Guardian. There is a request from Gray for publicity for The Four and a Half Colleges Fund in the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of women's education in India.

There is correspondence relating to an offer by Gray of articles from a visit to India for publication in the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of the opinions of delegates of the round table conference, and the committees returning to continue its work in India, which are declined, and accompanied by related internal memoranda. There are also notes by Gray offered for use by the Manchester Guardian on the bad feeling in India generated by the [British government] ordinances, which is declined owing to the anecdotal nature of the evidence provided.

GDN/A/G40/6-7 are internal employment history index cards for Gray and the Reverend H. Gray, 1921.

GDN/A/G40/5 is an article [by Gray] entitled 'The English in India and the Dyer Case' in the Manchester Guardian, 1920.
