Scope and Content

Correspondence relating to Kevin Roantree O'Shiel (1891-1970), politician, civil servant and Irish nationalist, with a letter of introduction for O'Shiel from Desmond MacCarthy, literary reviewer and drama critic, with the suggestion of a meeting between Scott and O'Shiel.

Also included is correspondence with O'Shiel, relating to confirmation of an agreement for a series of supplements on Ireland by the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of their length, and of editorial authority. There is discussion of the boundary dispute in Ulster, praise by O'Shiel of an article on the subject published in the Manchester Guardian, and of the provision by O'Shiel of a statement on the situation in Ulster for the paper, which is acknowledged with thanks. There is a statement by O'Shiel entitled 'The Position of the Free State with regard to Partition'. Also included are internal memoranda discussing the statement, with reference to a meeting between O'Shiel, E.T. Scott and J.R. Scott.
