Scope and Content

Correspondence with R.H. Gretton, journalist, relating to discussion of Gretton's employment as [London editor] of the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of salary, increases in salary, and the recommendation of Gretton by J.B. A[tkins], journalist. Also included is discussion of renegotiation of the terms of Gretton's employment.

There is discussion of difficulties encountered by Gretton in gathering advances political news, and obtaining interviews with politicians. There is also correspondence relating to Scott's decision to terminate Gretton's employment at the Manchester Guardian, discussion of the areas in which Scott is dissatisfied with Gretton's work, and a request by Gretton to reassurance that Scott has not mentioned his intended change in staff prior to informing Gretton. There is discussion of Gretton's intention to announce his resignation, rather than the termination of his employment, with discussion of arrangements and details.
