Scope and Content

Correspondence with George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), playwright and polemicist, relating to a request by Scott that Shaw become a music and theatre critic for the Manchester Guardian, which is declined, with discussion of Shaw's experience of work as a critic, and reference to the general election, 1918.

Also included is an offer of an article by Shaw on Anglo-American relations with reference to a potential future imperial war, which is declined, and discussion of amendments made to a letter to the editor by Shaw, [entitled 'The Silencing of Sir H. Wilson's Assassins'], to ensure its quick publication in the paper. There is an offer of an article by Shaw on the case and trial of [Henry Daniel] Seymour, which is declined. Also included is an article by Shaw on the centenary of Samuel Butler, writer and artist, accompanied by related internal memoranda. There is an internal memo discussing potential payment of Shaw in relation to a potential supplement for the paper.
