Scope and Content

Correspondence with William Horsfall Carter (1900-1976), journalist, and C.P. Scott, and E.T. Scott, and W.P. Crozier, relating to repeated requests by Carter for employment at the Manchester Guardian. There is correspondence and memoranda relating to Carter's work experience, updated with each application for employment, reference to an interview with Carter conducted by E.T. Scott, and related internal memoranda discussing the subject. There is reference to Carter's employment at The Spectator, The Christian Science Monitor, The New Commonwealthand the Post War Settlement Committee.

There is correspondence relating to proposed articles by Carter on Spain's economic policy, a book edited by Carter on the Life of L.B. Krassin, the League of Nations and its peace keeping role, articles entitled Peace and Public Opinion, and offers to send articles from a visit to Germany, and on the Indian Committee and Conference, all of which are refused.

Also included is correspondence relating to an offer of temporary employment to Carter at the Manchester Guardian [during the Second World War], with reference to arrangements for the role, salary and accommodation, and related internal memoranda. There is discussion of Carter's resignation in order to take up the position of [European Publicity Officer] at the BBC, with reference to notice period and holidays.

There is also a letter of condolence from Crozier relating to an [unknown event] in 1942.

There is a letter of recommendation for Carter from Robert Dell, journalist, and a card of introduction from George [Peabody] Gooch, historian.
