Scope and Content

Correspondence between C. Prideaux Selby, Conservative and Unionist Central Office, and E.T. Scott, relating to discussion of an article by [Edward] Harby [journalist] on the conditions in prison timber camps in Russia published in the Manchester Guardian. There is discussion of a further article in the Bulletin [of Communist and Socialist Activities] of the Subversive Movements Investigation Department which questions the authority of the information provided by Harby, and of the Manchester Guardian's ability to provide contact information for their source.

There are related internal memoranda discussing the subject, and also reference to a similar attack on the Manchester Guardian published in The Tablet. Also included is a letter of apology printed by the bulletin following the acknowledgement that the information they had printed about the Manchester Guardian had proved to be false.

GDN/A/C72/4 is a memorandum entitled 'Arguments of Socialist Members in the House'.

GDN/A/C72/7 is the title page of the Weekly Bulletin of Communist and Socialist Activities, 2 June 1931.
