Scope and Content

Correspondence with Benjamin Ifor, Evans, Baron Evans of Hungershall (1899-1982), literary scholar and college administrator, relating to discussion of multiple articles by Evans submitted for the back pages of the Manchester Guardian. There is discussion of Evans' appointment to the Albert Kahn Travelling Fellowship, and the potential submission of articles from his travels, accompanied by related internal memoranda. There are also memoranda relating to a list of Evans' contributions to the Manchester Guardian, and a draft of the information for his record of employment history card.

There is correspondence relating to a request by Scott that Evans become a reviewer of books for the Manchester Guardian, and discussion of Evans' interest in political and social subjects. There is a request that Evans review a book [The Phantom Public] by Walter Lippmann, journalist, .

Also included is correspondence relating to discussion of the potential employment of Evans as a leader writer for the Manchester Guardian, with reference to terms, work and salary. There is a request from Scott for a reference for Evans from H.B. Charlton, professor of English at the University of Manchester, which is provided. There is discussion of the offer, which Evans decides not to accept. There is also a renewal of the offer employment to Evans at a later date, and discussion of a trial of occasional employment, though again, Evans does not join the paper's staff.

There is a request from Evans for permission to use articles published in the Manchester Guardian in an anthology of sketches, entitled Encounters, which is granted. There is a letter of congratulation to Scott [on his eightieth birthday], which is acknowledged.
