Scope and Content

Correspondence with F.S. Attenborough, journalist, relating to discussion of appointment as chief sub-editor at the Manchester Guardian, of salary and staffing arrangements in the sub-editor department, and on Attenborough's health.

There are internal memoranda from E.T. Scott and W.P. Crozier discussing language, style and grammar, with particular complaints from Crozier on grammatical errors.

There is correspondence relating to discussion of and arrangements for Attenborough to return to work following staff shortages as a result of the outbreak of the [Second World] War, including his resignation from this work following an accident, and general discussion of the war.

Also included is a letter of thanks from Attenborough to the editorial staff of the Manchester Guardian for their remembrance on his birthday.

GDN/A/A63/11-14 are newspaper cuttings of announcements of Attenborough's retirement after 45 years at the Manchester Guardian in 1938, in the Worlds Press News, the Northampton Evening Telegraph and Newspaper World.
