Scope and Content

Correspondence with representatives of the National Council for Prevention of War, relating to a request for a signature in support of the visit of Senator Borah to give an address at a conference on war danger, with discussion of the [Geneva naval conference], which is granted. There is also a request that Scott chair a meeting at the annual congress of the National Council for Prevention of War, and a request that he attend the opening ceremony of the congress, which are declined. There is a request to discuss the issues to be raised at the congress with Scott.

There is an apology for an error in stating that [Samuel Kerkham] Ratcliffe, journalist and lecturer, was employed by the Manchester Guardian in the programme for the war danger conference, which is accepted. There is a request for Scott's views on concerns expressed by the National Council for Prevention of War over the number of British war films which are made, and a request for editorial reference from Scott for a pamphlet on the subject. There correspondence relating to a meeting to discuss Anglo-American relations, accompanied by a related internal memorandum.

There is also a request from the American Committee for the Outlawry of War for an article published in the Manchester Guardian entitled 'The Cruiser Question, Misapprehension about Armed Liners', which is declined, as no copy is available, though directions for locating a copy at the British Museum are provided. Also included is an internal memorandum discussing the subject. There is a request for Scott to allow his name to be attached to a statement by the National Council for Prevention of War, along with representatives of other peace societies, on the situation in India, which is declined. Also included is a draft copy of the statement.

There is an expression of concern at the reiteration of negativity in the public debate regarding disarmament, and a request that the Manchester Guardian publish a leader article appealing to Ramsay MacDonald, prime minister, on the subject. There is also a request for a signature from Scott for a statement of support to be given to Arthur Henderson, politician, as chairman of the world disarmament conference, which is granted. Also included is discussion of the potential postponement of the conference.
