Scope and Content

Correspondence with the Baltimore Sun, principally with Paul Patterson, publisher of the Baltimore Sun newspapers, relating to discussion of a request to use and access material generated by the Manchester Guardian foreign correspondent on the [Washington] Disarmament Conference, 1921.

Also included are thanks and admiration for editorial articles sent to the Baltimore Sun on the General Strike in 1926, and discussion of the correspondent to be sent by the Manchester Guardian to report on talks between Herbert Hoover, president of the United States, and Ramsay MacDonald, prime minister, in 1929.

There is correspondence relating to a misrepresentation of the Manchester Guardian's position on American naval policy, and assistance provided by the Baltimore Sun in correcting the misquotation. Also included are internal memoranda discussing the subject.

There is correspondence with E.T. Scott relating to arrangements for visits by Baltimore Sun staff including Patterson, [Gwinn F.] Owens, [Henry Louis] Mencken and [H. Kingston] Fleming to Manchester. There are references to C.P. Scott's retirement, expression of condolences on his death, and thanks for an editorial and obituary on C.P. Scott in the Baltimore Sun.
