Scope and Content

Correspondence with William Longden (1859?-1941), journalist, relating to discussion of Longden's potential employment on the reporting staff of the Manchester Guardian, with enquiry as to Longden's salary requirements. There is also correspondence relating to an offer to Longden of a post in the London office of the paper, with discussion of salary and work involved, which is accompanied by internal correspondence with E.J. Burton, London manager, which discusses the quality of Longden's work and interest in politics. There is discussion of Longden's return to employment in the Manchester office.

There is correspondence relating to the termination of Londgen's employment owing to the need for a reduction in staff at the Manchester Guardian, a request by Longden to remain on the staff at a reduced salary, and an offer by the paper of temporary re-employment at reduced salary, whilst Longden is looking for work.
