Scope and Content

Correspondence with W.A. Gill, relating to an offer by Gill to write articles for the Manchester Guardian on the effects of the [First World] War outside Europe from a tour of United States and Far East, with discussion of the topics, which is refused. However, Scott suggests that the paper would be happy to hear from Gill should anything of interest occur, and Gill accepts the offer to potentially send occasional articles. There is reference to the provision of a letter of commendation for Gill from Scott, a copy of which is included.

There is also discussion of the details of Gill's trip, the American perspective on the war and on British maritime warfare methods, the views of Russia and America and their potential involvement in the [First World War], and meetings between Gill and [Robert] Lansing, secretary of state and other American officials. Also included is a letter from Gill relating to discussion of an article in the Manchester Guardian which proposed that [James] Bryce, politician, [Arthur] Balfour, politician and prime minister, travel to America to conduct negotiations in Washington, and the suggestion by Gill that [Jean Jules] Jusserand, diplomat, might perform the same function for the Allies on behalf of France.

There is a letter of introduction for Gill from J.A. Hobson, economist.
