Scope and Content

Correspondence with Thomas Wodehouse Legh, second Baron Newton (1857-1942), politician, relating to an article by Newton on the origin of the [First World War] for publication in the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of Scott's views on the subject. There is also a letter relating to the provision of five guineas by Newton for the Imperial War Relief Fund.

There is discussion of Newton's decision to decline a request that he write an appreciation of [George Nathaniel] Curzon, [1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston], foreign secretary, for the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of Curzon's present role in government. There is also reference to Newton's acceptance of a request by the Manchester Guardian for an article on the [Smoke Abatement Bill].
