Scope and Content

Correspondence with Burton, Yates and Hart, solicitors, on behalf of Frederick Henry Warren, trading agent, relating to a complaint by Warren regarding a review of his book, The Confessions of a Tenderfoot Coaster, published in the Manchester Guardian. There is discussion of the publication of a letter to the editor on the subject by Warren, the content of the book, the statements made in the review, and Warren's intention to bring a case against the paper for [libel], if an apology is not published.

Also included is a report commissioned by the Manchester Guardian from Tamworth, Worthington and Co., solicitors, which recommends that the paper reach a private settlement with Warren. There is discussion of the terms of the settlement, and the wording of the disclaimer and apology. There is a letter to the author of the review, John Hobbis Harris, campaigner against slavery, informing him of the situation. Also included are related internal memoranda, and original and amended drafts of the statement of apology.
