Scope and Content

Correspondence with John Douglas Quirk, journalist and editor, relating to an offer of a month's trial at the Manchester Guardian, and praise of Quirk's previous contributions to the paper, which is accepted. Also included is discussion of Quirk's intention to send articles to the Manchester Guardian from Paris. There is a request by Quirk to contribute to the paper's books and bookmen column for the third consecutive summer, which is acknowledged, but with the information that the paper may already be fully supplied in this regard. Also included are related internal memoranda, discussing Quirk and his previous work for the Manchester Guardian.

There is correspondence relating to Quirk's role as correspondent for the Manchester Guardian in Constantinople, with discussion of subjects for articles, and the payment of expenses. There is a recommendation from Quirk for Harold Thompson as a replacement correspondent [on Quirk's leaving the city to take up the post of editor of The Ceylon Observer]. Also included is a request by Quirk to return to his role as correspondent in Constantinople, which is granted, and accompanied by an internal memorandum discussing the subject.
