Scope and Content

Correspondence with Goldsworthy Lowes Dickinson (1862-1932), scholar and advocate of a league of nations, relating to discussion of peace terms and negotiations [during the First World War], with reference to Serbia, Belgium, Poland and Germany's colonies in Africa, and of an article by Dickinson published in War and Peace ['The German Socialists and the War']. There is a request from Dickinson to write articles on peace terms and negotiations for the Manchester Guardian, which are accepted in the form of letters to the editor.

There is correspondence relating to an enquiry by Dickinson as to potential employment at the Manchester Guardian, and also of the recommendation of G. Tonliman, Kings College, Oxford for employment. There is also correspondence relating to discussion of the use of colonial troops by France in Europe, and a request from Dickinson to act as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian in Geneva for the second time, with discussion of the efficacy of the League of Nations.

There is correspondence discussing an Information bulletin from the Chinese Information Bureau on the political situation in China, with reference to the Kong Kong-Canton strike, and expression of doubts as to its authority.
