Scope and Content

Correspondence with A.P. Ryan, journalist and public relations manager, relating to a request by Ryan to be considered for employment at the Manchester Guardian, with details of previous experience. Also included is a letter of recommendation from [Henry William Carless] Davis, historian. There is an offer of a trial period of employment for Ryan, followed by a permanent offer of employment as a secretary and reporter at the paper, which is accepted. There is correspondence relating to a request for information from Geoffrey Dawson, newspaper editor, as to whether Ryan might be suitable for a trial period of employment at The Times, which is provided, and accompanied by related internal correspondence.

There is a request by Ryan to be considered for work on foreign affairs for the paper, and an internal memorandum discussing the subject. Also included is correspondence on a proposed visit to Germany by Ryan for the Manchester Guardian, discussion of the trip, and of the political situation between Germany and France.

There is also correspondence relating to discussion of Ryan's resignation in order to take up a post at the Daily Telegraph, and reference to Ryan's marriage to Rachel Montague [granddaughter of Scott]. There are offers of articles by Ryan on the current situation in Iraq, and from a tour undertaken through the Sudan, with discussion of the content of the articles, which are accepted.
