Scope and Content

Correspondence with William Ralph Hall Caine (1865-1939), relating to a discussion of the Isle of Man's contribution towards the war debt, with reference to British banks located on the island, and a request that the issue be publicised in the Manchester Guardian.

Also included is correspondence relating to the provision of a book, The Challenge of Lancashire, by Hall Caine, in which there is a reference to Scott.

GDN/A/C4/6-7 are newspaper cuttings of an article entitled 'Deprivation to Manxland' on the payment of income tax by the Isle of Man Bank and a letter to the editor by Hall Caine in response to the article in the [Isle of Man] Daily and Weekly Times.

GDN/A/C4/4-8, 9-10 are correspondence with William Ralph Caine.

Correspondence with Sir (Thomas Henry) Hall Caine (1853-1931), novelist, relating to discussion of Hall Caine's decision to refuse to issue press seats to the Manchester Guardian for a play, The Quality of Mercy by Hall Caine, as he feels that the Manchester Guardian will not give it a fair critical reception.

Also included is correspondence relating to discussion of the general election of 1924, and Hall Caine's dissatisfaction with the current political situation in relation to domestic and foreign policy, with a request to write articles for publication in the Manchester Guardian on a wide variety of related subjects.
