Scope and Content

Correspondence with J.C. Johnstone, relating to a request by Johnstone to be considered for employment at the Manchester Guardian, with suggestion that he might begin with reviews of books, discussion of the subjects Johnstone is best able to write about, and arrangements for a meeting between Johnstone and Scott, organised by [John Leofric] Stocks, philosopher. There is discussion of a specimen of work provided by Johstone entitled 'Imagination in Politics', with praise of the article, but also confirming that there is no current vacancy at the paper. Also included is a copy of the article.

Also included is correspondence relating to an offer by Johnstone of occasional articles from a visit to Czechoslovakia, which are accepted, with discussion of preferred subjects for the articles of political and social development, as opposed to politics. There are applications by Johnstone for employment at the Manchester Guardian as a leader writer, and as a correspondent in Berlin, with details of previous experience at the Morning Post, and the Economic Review, and current role as a correspondent in Berlin for the Morning Post, and the restrictions of this role. A request is made by Scott for a specimen article from Berlin, which is not accepted owing to its length. Also included is an internal memorandum discussing the subject.

There are letters of recommendation for Johnstone from [John Leofric] Stocks, philosopher, and H.A. Gwynne, journalist, and Guy C. Pollock, journalist and editor, at the Morning Post.

GDN/A/J16 is an internal employment history index card for Johnstone, 1920.

GDN/A/J16/8 is a review [by Johnstone?] of Bergson and his Philosophy by J. Alexander Gunn in the Manchester Guardian, 1920.
