Scope and Content

Correspondence with Geoffrey Theodore Garratt (1888-1942), administrator in India and author, relating to a request for a meeting with Scott, and an offer by Garratt to write articles on India for the Manchester Guardian whilst on a visit to the country. Also included is a letter from [John Tudor] Gwynn, civil servant in India, relating to a request, whilst acting as Indian correspondent for the Manchester Guardian, to return to Britain owing to having completed his work there, and with discussion of Garratt's capabilities and previous work.

There is correspondence between Garratt and E.T. Scott, relating to discussion of the employment of Garratt to write articles on India for the Manchester Guardian, with details of and arrangements for payment for articles, telegrams and expenses, the provision of a letter of credential, and accompanied by related internal memoranda. There is discussion of potential articles and information from Garratt on alleged police barbarity, the Meerut [Conspiracy] case, the [Indian National] Congress, and meetings of the chamber of princes relating to the round table conferences, safeguards, the immediate future of India, India's population and Lord Irwin [Edward Frederick Lindley Wood], politician and diplomat, viceroy of India. There is a list of the articles produced by Garratt, and information on their publication, accompanied by related internal memoranda.

There is reference to Garratt's role as an advisor to the Labour party group at the second round table conference, and an offer to write articles on the conference, which is declined. Also included is correspondence relating to Garratt's appointment as [naib] diwan of Baroda, which curtails his ability to write for the Manchester Guardian, and discussion of the appointment of Edward Thompson in his place. There are also proposals by Garratt to write articles on the Franchise Committee in Calcutta, and on the government in India from Simla.

There is correspondence between Garratt and W.P. Crozier relating to Garratt's employment as a special correspondent for the Manchester Guardian during a visit to Finland, and the provision of a letter of credential for this role.

There is a letter of introduction for Garratt from Tarini Sinha, political scientist. There is a letter of recommendation for Garratt to E.T. Scott from Kingsley Martin, journalist and editor.
