Scope and Content

Correspondence with Charles Powell, journalist, relating to Powell's potential employment by the Manchester Guardian, with the provision of specimens of work and arrangements for a meeting. Also included is a letter of introduction and recommendation from John Lewis Alexander Paton, schoolmaster. There is a letter of thanks from Powell for two periods of temporary employment in the reporter's room of the paper, with reference to his being declared medically unfit to be called up [for service during the First World War].

There is correspondence between Powell and E.T. Scott, relating to the termination of Powell's employment in relation to letter to the editor, with the hope that he will continue work as a reviewer of verse for the paper. There is discussion of Powell's employment in the Manchester Guardian library, and the reduction in his salary, with the termination of his employment withdrawn.

There is correspondence between Powell and W.P. Crozier, relating to a skull fracture and other injuries sustained by Powell when knocked off of his bike by a car. There is discussion of his injury, recovery and return to work. Powell is strongly advised by Crozier to give up cycling, owing to its dangers for him, and to the risk to his ability to work. Also included is discussion of a reduction in Powell's salary due to the effects of the [Second World] war, and arrangements for holiday cover of Powell's work. There is correspondence relating to Powell's recovery and return to work following the breaking of his arm.
