Scope and Content

Correspondence with Lady Hilda Petrie, Egyptologist, relating to an offer by Petrie of an article for the Manchester Guardian on a Coptic hermitage, discovered in a cave in Egypt and excavated by Petrie, which is accepted, with discussion of required editing and length. Also included is an offer of an article on an expedition [in Palestine?], which is declined, and accompanied by internal memoranda discussing the subject.

There is an expression of thanks for a descriptive account by Petrie of the findings of an expedition in Palestine, and the suggestion that information may be provided on the work carried out in the following season. There is a further offer by Petrie to provide an article on findings in Palestine, which is declined. There is a request by Petrie for assistance in an appeal for funds for The British School of Archaeology in Egypt, and a copy of a letter to the editor of The Times on the subject, which makes reference to the work of Sir Flinders Petrie, Egyptologist, in Palestine.

GDN/A/P30/4 is an article entitled 'A Model of Scholarship, The Gospel of St John According to the Earliest Coptic Manuscript' in the Manchester Guardian, 1925.
