Scope and Content

Correspondence with R.A. Furness relating to Furness' work as a correspondent and informant form Cairo for the Manchester Guardian, recommendation by [Arthur] Ransome, journalist and writer, and discussion of the publication of articles by Furness, of their form, and a request by Furness for his contributions to remain anonymous.

There is a request from Scott for telegrams from Furness on important developments in Egypt, with discussion of the law [regulating public] assemblies, and relations between Egypt and England, which is accepted. There is correspondence relating to provision of translations of the assemblies bill, and discussion of draft laws on firearms and Omdas [translations not included.

There is a recommendation by Furness of Charles A.G. Mackintosh, journalist, as a replacement correspondent in Egypt, in Furness' absence, and a letter to Mackintosh offering him the role.

There is discussion of the Egyptian elections, and their potential date, with reference to Mahmoud Pasha, prime minister of Egypt. Also included is a request for Furness' views on whether coverage in the Manchester Guardian might have an adverse effect on negotiations [relating to the Anglo-Egyptian treaty], and anxiety in terms of causing any obstruction. Also included is a request that Furness interview Pasha on behalf of the Manchester Guardian.

There is a request by Scott for a meeting to discuss the situation in Egypt, and an internal memorandum relating to payment of expenses for Furness. Also included is an offer of an article by Furness on the unveiling of the Rupert Brooke monument in Greece, which is accepted.
