Scope and Content

Correspondence with Edgar H. Brookes (1897-1979), senator and academic, relating to discussion of articles by Brookes on the situation in South Africa for potential publication in the Manchester Guardian. There is correspondence relating to the employment of Brookes on an occasional basis, with internal memoranda discussing Brookes' political views and value as a correspondent.

Also included is correspondence between Brookes and W.P. Crozier, relating to the employment of Brookes as a regular correspondent on South Africa for the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of length of and payment for articles. There is a letter of recommendation for Brookes from the previous South Africa correspondent, J[an] H[endrik] Hofmeyr, politician.
